Edina, Minnesota, a suburb just miles from Minneapolis and St. Paul, has become one of the Twin Cities' largest and most popular suburbs. With thirty nine parks, various businesses and employment opportunities, top-notch schools, lakes, shopping areas, and high quality medical facilities, Edina is not only an ideal community but it also is at a convenient location for anyone commuting into Minneapolis or St. Paul. From its simple beginnings as a Scottish and Irish immigrant community, Edina has grown into a diverse metropolitan city of nearly 50,000 residents where opportunities abound for individuals and families of all shapes and sizes.
The City of Edina began originally as a part of what is now Richfield. In the 1850s, families from Ireland came to the United States to flee the terrible potato famine at home. They claimed the area southwest of Minneapolis and called it Richfield Village. Scottish and English settlers soon joined the Irish and the area was covered in farms. By 1888, those living in Richfield Township decided to separate themselves from Richfield itself. After a lengthy debate, the new city was named Edina.
Independent School District (ISD) 273 operates schools for children primarily from Edina. With six elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school, this district's schools have become known all around the state as some of the highest-quality public educational facilities in the state of Minnesota. Along with these public facilities, Edina also has three private institutions: Our Lady Grace (a catholic school), St. Peters Lutheran School, and Calvin Christian School. These schools give residents many choices when choosing where to send their children.
Edina's public park area totals more than 1,550 acres. With thirty nine parks and numerous other facilities such as public golf courses, ice arenas, an art center, and more, there are always opportunities for outdoor and indoor recreation for youth and adults alike. Basketball and tennis courts, baseball fields, golf courses, an indoor golf facility, art center, and senior citizens' center give residents access to enjoy any and all recreational sports and games. Along with two public golf courses, the Edina Country Club and Interlachen Country Club provide a more exclusive golfing experience.
Edina is growing every single year thanks to its safe and family-friendly environment and innumerable opportunities for its residents. New houses, from affordable single-family homes to enormous mansions, are being built here all the time. Edina is even home to a few billionaires like Carl Pohlad and Richard M. Schultz. Edina has produced celebrities such as musician John Denver, who lived here for several years and wrote many of his most famous songs while living in Edina, and American Idol's Paris Bennett attended Edina High School. Edina was also home to the late baseball legend Kirby Puckett. It is no surprise that some of Minnesota's wealthiest residents reside in the City of Edina: with its excellent schools, beautiful parks and trails, and friendly community environment, what's not to love?
